“I put a dime down to mark my ball, and the dime slid away.” - Sam Snead on the speed of Oakmont's greens.

This week we're all US Open as the Oakmont content is Augusta-esque in its spectacle and scope. I mean they're going all out, the players are weighing in, and this is probably the most excited I've been for a US Open in years.

It's all about the grass

THE TRUE GREENSKEEPER'S REVENGE

Is it even a US Open if we don't get one hundred different videos of someone dropping a golf ball in the rough and then changing the camera perspective so it disappears completely?

But even Oakmont seems to be in a class of its own as the dropping the ball into the rough videos quickly gave way to actual pros attempting shots in practice rounds and in-tournament.

None more jarring than Phil's multiple attempts at a greenside flop shot. Re-post factory Ziregolf surfaced a fan's video of Phil undercutting two shots and you can almost hear his brain breaking. I mean this is a guy who just one week ago flopped a shot basically backwards over himself from the rim of a bunker and rolled it right into the hole. You're telling me that THIS GUY is having issues with the grass. Yikes.

Commentators across all the golf networks openly wondering if the winning score will be +8... +10?? Which is likely just golf's version of First Take where the idea is more to say something insane than it is say something right. And I'm sure by the time the weekend is out, we'll be staring down a winning score of -3 or something and laugh.

But either way, it's got us talking about Oakmont and that's impressive.

Coming to the 2028 Olympics

SYNCHRONIZED MOWING

Bravo to the USGA for posting one of the most impressive and hypnotizing course maintenance videos I've ever seen. Armadas of mowers, weed whackers being used like a sculptor's knife, and high school maintenance staff who appear to be earning every cent of their pay check.
The story behind why they use push mowers is because they're custom made to achieve the "correct" and diabolically long rough. Plus, push mowers don't leave tire marks so all the hillside rough will appear pristine and uniform.
It's the little things for these Pittsburgh people.
I also heard that in order to achieve rough that stands upright like it does at Oakmont, the staff must trim back the rough consistently for weeks and weeks so the strong base maintains its structure. Otherwise, rough of that length would just bend over and lay flat, leaving fluffy lies instead of creating the signature, black hole-like, golf ball-swallowing effect.
I bet my dad will really get into that fact—and the dozen or so of you who enjoy a good botany fun fact.

Hope you've got an excellent ground game

THIS IS TEXAS WEDGE COUNTRY

"Dotty, he's about 100 or so out and looks like he's pulled out the flat stick."
There's lag putting and then there's Oakmont lag putting... from 100 yards out... Just ask Marc Leishman.
Another USGA gem from the tourney lead-up showed Marc taking putter from over 100 yards out on the first hole. The drone slowly follows his ball as it winds its way down the hill then breaks HARD left and eventually settles 8? 10? feet from the pin.
(I'm awful at judging putt distances of all lengths beyond maybe one foot. I try to imagine myself laying down on the ground and then figure that's about six feet. And then when I test it with the Apple measuring tape app, I still miss the guess by one or two feet. Plus, I've never had the knowledge or experience to actually do anything with the foot length number on my putts anyways. I'm a feel guy!)

A collab for the ages—and fathers.

BONUS POINTS?? Don't mind if I do.

Easily my favorite golf memory so far with my son, Jack is a recent dinner we had with some friends and their similarly aged kid at the Torrey Pines grill. We pulled up to one of the fire pit tables outside and as we waited for food and drinks, the kids grabbed their mini putters and chased around the practice green just 20 yards away. It was sundown so maybe two golfers were practicing total and they had a blast giggling, rolling putts, kicking putts, rolling around. At Torrey friggin' Pines...

A small taste of what's hopefully many decades of golf to come.
